Dewi Sant

Hanner canrif o brifiant - a welodd
Calon ein diwylliant,
A heddiw trwy ei llwyddiant
Nid oes well na Dewi Sant
Over forty years ago on St Davids Day 1947, Ysgol Gymraeg Llanelli Opened it's doors to it's first pupils. Thus began a new chapter in the history of education in Wales. Here was the first designated Welsh medium school to be established under the jurisdiction of an education authority. This was the realisation of a dream for many Llanelli parents and this experiment by the local authority was worthy of great praise. Within a few years similar schools opened in a number of areas throughout the Principality and by today these schools are an essential part of both predominantly Welsh speaking areas as well as the more Anglicised industrial parts of Wales. Without doubt it was the success of the pioneering work seen at Llanelli that inspired many parents throughout Wales to campaign for similar schools in their own regions. Ysgol Dewi Sant's first head teacher, Mrs Olwen Williams, with her great vision and conviction of the importance of our Welsh heritage, ensured the success of the years of tireless pioneering.
