Consultation on the new draft GCSE subject criteria for Music
The new criteria will provide a framework within which all awarding bodies (including WJEC) will create the detail of their new specifications. These new specifications are due to be taught as from September 2009. A web based consultation process is currently taking place - the closing date for responses is September 15th. Young Composer of Dyfed 2007
The 2007 Young Composer of Dyfed final proved to be a superb success with each of the ten finalists astounding the audience with the quality of their compositions – performed by Alba Brass. Many congratulations to Claire Roberts (Bro Myrddin School) and Susie Goffin (Q.E.High School) on their success in this year’s competition. Claire won the Group A prize for those under 15 years, and Susie the prize for those 16 years and over. The overall title of Young Composer of Dyfed 2007 went Ruth Morris from Aberystwyth for her ‘Lullaby to Vaughan’ – many congratulations to her. Steffan Watkins won the audience prize. The adjudicator was the composer Lynne Plowman
Young Ensemble of Dyfed 2007
Many congratulations to the Tenby Wind Quartet (Sam Davies, Natasha van der Plas, Litona Harries and Lee Mottram) on winning the 2007 Young Ensemble of Dyfed Competition. In second place were ‘Freefall’ a jazz sextet from Penglais School in Aberystwyth, and in third place were the ‘Serendipity’ Piano Trio from Penweddig, Aberaeron and Newcastle Emlyn Schools. The other finalists were ‘Triple Shot’, a brass trio from Newcastle Emlyn, and ‘Constellation’, a wind quartet from Emlyn and Bro Myrddin Schools. The adjudicators were Peter Stacey, J. Glynne Evans and Jenny Doyne.

Congratulations
Many congratulations to Anne Denholm, Bro Myrddin School, on coming second in the 2006 Young Musician of Dyfed Competition, playing the harp. Congratulations also to Rupert Browne, French Horn (Emlyn School), and Catrin Price, Flute (Bro Myrddin) on reaching the final round. The winner was Steffan Ciccotti from Chethams School of Music on Marimba. Francis Moore-Colyer from Penglais School was third on the violin.
